Haley, pt. 1

"You're off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so... Get on your way!" ~ Dr. Seuss

I have to admit, this session was somewhat difficult for me. My baby sister, whose birth I was present for, whose hand I have held as she learned to walk, whose numerous athletic practices and events I have watched, whose every birthday party I have been present for, who was just two years old yesterday it seems, is graduating high school. She is graduating high school this year, and then next year beginning her life and her pursuit of a medical career. She is closing one door, ending one major chapter in her life so that she can move forward and find her true self. She will make new friends that she might have never even talked to in high school. She will travel to places she never even considered. She will be exposed to all sorts of different lifestyles, cultures, and personalities that the bubble of our home town has hidden from her. Her mind will expand, her compassion will grow, her heart will get broken, then healed, then broken, then healed, until it finds whoever she decides is worthy of it. I worry about her, because she is my baby sister. If I could, I would protect her from all the things I fear in the world that I hope she never has to see. If I could, though, she would never truly understand or see for what it is the exquisite beauty that we seem to only appreciate after we've witnessed all the ugly. I am excited for her, because she is my baby sister. She is going to do some pretty amazing things with her beautiful life.  This is only the beginning.
